Captain Robert Carrillo
Captain Rob Carrillo is a seasoned mariner, certified American Sailing instructor, and lifelong adventurer with over five decades of experience on the water. His journey began as a teenage tender and assistant in Dana Point Harbor, where he first fell in love with the rhythm of the ocean and the spirit of sailing. From racing sailboats between Southern California and Mexico to captaining voyages in the San Juan Islands, La Paz, and the British Virgin Islands, Rob brings a world of experience to every charter and lesson.
With a professional background in offshore diving and marine construction, Rob worked as a diver and project manager on deep-sea engineering sites—instilling a rigorous commitment to safety, clear communication, and people-centered leadership. He later founded Carrillo Underwater Systems, designing and manufacturing underwater lights, cameras, radios, and dive recording tools for commercial and recreational use.
Rob comes from a legacy of craftsmanship and innovation. He is the son of Fred Carrillo, famed hot rodder and record-holding Bonneville racer who built Carrillo Rods, a name synonymous with precision and performance. That same devotion to quality, curiosity, and hands-on ingenuity lives on in Rob’s approach to sailing and teaching.
As a father of three and "Papa" to four grandchildren, Rob is passionate about passing on his knowledge and love of the water. He’s taught people of all ages and abilities—from preschoolers to retirees—and has generously donated time to youth programs like 4-H and MATE ROV competitions. Whether you're a first-time sailor, a curious learner looking for a hands-on vacation, or someone who just wants to relax while Rob handles the helm, you’re in capable and caring hands.
Available for private charters aboard MarAmor or other vessels, Captain Rob brings not just skill and professionalism, but warmth, storytelling, and a true love of the sea.
